Help Save the Sea of Cortez
The proposal to eliminate drift gillnets and ban large-scale longlining inside of 50 miles of Mexico's coasts are in jeopardy. Although the new head of fisheries Ramon Corral publicly supported these regulations last December, a coalition of Mexican commercial interests and the U.S. based Defenders of Wildlife are aggressively supporting a compromise that would allow longlining inside of 30 miles of the coast. The move would permit up to 260 new longline vessels into the already stressed Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez).
The Billfish Foundation is now involved in last minute negotiations to maintain the 50-mile protection zone. We urge you to lend your vocal support to our position.
