I don't get actually to attend JavaOne. I usually can't attend sessions and actually learn something new. It's an exciting experience, but not fun or relaxing. At OSCON, however, I'm in a completely different environment. Java is just one of many languages here (and definitely in the minority, Perl seems to .. Read the rest of this entry.

This is Part One of a series of articles on Java.next. In Part One, I will explore the common ground shared by the Java.next languages. I have chosen four languages which together represent "Java.next": Clojure, Groovy, JRuby, and Scala. At first glance, these languages are wildly different. Clojure is a Lisp. Groovy is the "almost Java" choice. JRuby has the beauty of Ruby, and the mindshare of Rails. Scala, unlike the others, brings the notion that we need more static typing. In the dim and distant 'good old days' the act of shopping involved carrying your money in a purse and your purchases in a basket. Today, you carry your money in a basket and your purchases will fit your purse. Face it!? At last I understand the true meaning of sensible pascal program language.

It describes, in meticulous detail:

My grandmother, who could do very many things, couldn't work the video remote. When I first realized that I asked myself if, when I get to that age, I would be able to program in that new language of the future? Or will I think of it as a newfangled video player that I can't control? At the time I was programming Pascal and Modula 2, and, considering using the cutting edge dBase III for database driven applications. What reminded me of this was coming across Paul Graham's Blub Paradox. To ..read more.

Perl 5.005 Perl has become the premier scripting language of the Web, as most CGI programs are written in Perl. However, Perl is widely used as a rapid prototyping language and a "glue" language that makes it possible for different systems to work well together. Perl is popular with system administrators who use it for an infinite number of automation tasks. Perl's roots are in UNIX. Because Perl is an interpreted language, Perl programs are highly portable across systems.
